Cat and dog fleas are two very similar species. Cat fleas are the most commonly encountered of the two species in homes and businesses. The Dog flea is usually found on wild hosts rather than on domestic pets. Both species prefer dogs or cats as hosts although they may be found on a wide variety of other animals including rodents and livestock. Areas where fleas are most prevalent indoors would include those areas where fur bearing pets spend the majority of their time; areas adjacent to a bird nest or wild animal nest; areas where sunlight may shine through a window or door; and/or crawl spaces or other protected areas. The flea has a complete metamorphosis (egg; larva; pupa; adult) and will normally emerge from the pupa to adult stage in 7 - 14 days (temperature ranges can cause this time frame to vary greatly).
Control is accomplished by the use of adulticides and growth regulators to the areas frequented by warm blooded animals. Prior to treatment all floor spaces should be vacuumed and/or cleaned, coils and other areas of electrical appliances that collect dust and lint should be vacuumed, (after vacuuming has been completed immediately remove the bag from the machine and dispose of it outside), furnace filters should be replaced, children’s toys and pets food dishes should be placed at counter level, and bedding should be removed and laundered. Other preparations may be required and should be provided by your technician. The cost of treatment will range from $185 to $285.00 Treatment of pets should be coordinated to be accomplished at the same time the residence is treated and should only be accomplished by a licensed professional. |
